Why I Went Into UX

Aug 12, 2023

Why did I decide to double down on UX Design even though I was 6 months away from graduating and had a job lined up in Marketing?

After doing a couple of marketing internships, I realized I didn't believe in the products I was marketing for. The ads I created, the campaigns I ran, and the words I typed were just.... 💩. They added nothing to society. In fact, I just made more clutter online.

I decided marketing wasn't for me.

Instead, I started my search for a career I thought would be fulfilling. I started, by interviewing anyone I saw as successful, and let me tell ya! There were a lot of them! I interviewed a:

⭐ House Contractor turned NASA mechanic kit maker

⭐ Professor who got his doctorate while running 5 businesses

⭐ Military Private stepped up to help the special ops find the bad guys

⭐ Finally, I contacted  Vince Stinson, who opened the doors to UX Design

Vince explained what he did, his lifestyle, and what I needed to do to get into the industry. I felt that what he was saying about making products better for the people using them would be something I could get behind! I already had a background in web development and web design so I doubled down and got to work making myself a UX Designer!

1) I rejected my job offer at the marketing gig
2) I started my own freelance business to build a portfolio
3) I worked hard to get clients and deliver awesome user experiences while finishing my degree
4)Eventually, I landed a job at KLAS Research
5)Now, I am looking for a new opportunity

Looking back, I have no regrets and absolutely love my job. I feel I am doing my part to clean up the online space, make awesome user experiences, and promote accessibility so everyone can enjoy it.

Thanks, Vince Stinson for giving a college student the time of day, and giving me some direction in life!
